HIEF Roadshows 2009
We have refreshed the HIEF Roadshow to include discussion and DVD footage along with an outline of key equalities legislation.

Our Aim is to
·          raise general awareness levels of Equality & Diversity issues
·          grow understanding of what equality & diversity means, why it is important to us, and what rights and responsibilities we have under the law

Who should attend?
The Roadshows are directed primarily at those in employment – both employers and employees - but are also of relevance to volunteers and anyone with a particular interest in equality & diversity issues – in other words, they are for everyone.

What will I learn?
·          What is Equality & Diversity?  - How we stereotype and discriminate
·          Why is Equality & Diversity important? - Moral, Business & Legal case
·          Discrimination & Inappropriate Behaviour - Types of discrimination; Challenging Behaviour DVD
·          The Legislation - Why it’s there; Where it came from; Our Rights and Responsibilities; Overview of the main pieces of legislation; The Equality Bill – What’s happening next?

How do I register?
HIEF Roadshows are designed with busy people in mind and combine a short (2hr) information session with a light lunch to allow the opportunity to network and ask questions.  To reserve a place, please complete the Roadshow Booking Form (see top of page) with your contact details and any specific requirements to allow you to attend. Full details of our contact details are on the booking form, but please feel free to contact us with any queries.

Scottish Rural Equality Network (SREN
)
The Highlands & Islands Equality Forum (HIEF) was appointed by the Equality & Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in September 2008 to develop a Scottish Rural Equality Network (SREN). The SREN is visualised as a multi-dimensional network in which rural equality stakeholders at all levels (viz. national and local public bodies, advocacy and support groups, and individuals experiencing barriers to equal opportunities) can interact with others and share common concerns, issues, interests, ideas etc, thereby building capacity to tackle the barriers to equality in rural areas and effect positive change on the ground in their own areas. To learn more about the SREN, please go to Scottish Rural Equality Network

Our Aim is to
1.      Develop a pilot SREN website
2.      Build the face-to-face aspect of the network through events on emerging themes
3.      Assist the growth of local equalities networks such that local capacity to address rural issues is developed

2009 SREN Events
1.        SREN Website Presentations
The SREN website pilot will go live in August 2009. To learn more about the proposed website, please go to Scottish Rural Equality Network

Who should attend?
People from both the voluntary and public sectors who, as part of their work remit, have an active interest in the challenges to equality experienced in rural areas.

What will I learn?
HIEF is holding a series of ‘tutorials’ that provide an introduction to the website and guidance on how to register and use the SREN. These one-and-a-half-hour sessions will be delivered by HIEF, mostly via video-conference link with one face-to-face session being held in Inverness.

How do I register?
Details of local VC venues will be announced when we have a clearer idea of demand, so please do get in touch as soon as possible to indicate your interest. To reserve a place, please complete the SREN Website Booking Form (see top of page)

2.        Seminars on Rural Identity
We are holding a series of seminars across rural Scotland on the theme of ‘Rural Identity’. In some cases, we plan to link two concurrent events via Video-Conferencing.

Who should attend?
People from both the voluntary and public sectors who, as part of their work, have an active interest in the challenges to equality experienced in rural areas.

What will I learn?
Seminars on Rural Identity will allow participants to
·          Explore the concept of identity; its complexity and subjectivity – through self-reflection and discussion
·          Consider the links between identity, stereotyping and discrimination
·          Build relationships – locally and across rural Scotland

How do I register?
The SREN Seminars are free of charge and will require you to carry out some short preparatory exercises and bring to the event an artefact that you feel reflects your rural identity. To reserve a place, please complete the SREN Seminar Booking Form (see top of page) with your contact details and any specific requirements to allow you to attend. Full details of our contact details are on the booking form, but please feel free to contact us with any queries.

3.

SREN Local Development Days
We are offering a ‘bolt on’ session following the Seminars on Rural Identity to allow local equality stakeholders to discuss how they can cascade learning from the seminar into the local community. Alternatively, these sessions can be used to explore capacity building of local equality forums. HIEF is happy to facilitate (or not) as required.

Who should attend?
People from local Equality Forums (or those wishing to start an Equality Forum), both the voluntary and public sectors who, as part of their work, have an active interest in the challenges to equality experienced in rural areas.

What will I learn?
HIEF will facilitate a workshop with an agenda directed by local agents, possibly covering:
·          Who in the local community need to learn about identity?
·          What key messages should be passed on – How, and by whom?
·          What capacity building is required to carry this forward?
·          Can HIEF help in any way?

How do I register?
The local SREN Development Sessions are free of charge. To reserve a place, please complete the SREN Development Session Booking Form (see top of page) with your contact details and any specific requirements to allow you to attend. Full details of our contact details are on the booking form, but please feel free to contact us with any queries.
